How do I receive Jesus?

I hear people talk about receiving Jesus, I am not sure what this means. I do believe that Jesus existed. I believe that it is a historical fact that He lived, I even believe that He rose from the dead. I  love going to church. I do have times that I pray and I have favourite Bible verses which I always read. I am just not sure what it means to receive or accept Jesus into my life.

Because of what Jesus Christ did for each of us on the cross, the Bible declares in 1 John 5:12 that anyone who has the Son (Jesus) has life. To receive that life, we must receive Jesus. We receive Him as our personal saviour, through faith. That means that we receive Jesus as our saviour by trusting in the person of Jesus and His death for our sins.

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God”—

(Jn 1:12)

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.”

(Joh 3:16-18)

What this means is that we approach God with the realisation that we are sinners and there is nothing within ourselves or what we can do to deserve salvation. The only way to receive salvation is by relying completely on the work of Jesus alone. We do this by faith, by trusting completely that His death paid in full the price for the guilt of my sin.

If you want to receive this free gift of salvation, you can pray a simple prayer to receive Jesus into your life. You can declare your trust in Jesus by firstly acknowledging your sinfulness, express your acceptance of His forgiveness and put your faith in Him for your salvation.

The prayer may look like the following simple prayer:

“Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Saviour and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be.”

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
(1Jn 1:9)
