Jesus has been acclaimed as the greatest religious leader who ever lived, as being the most influential person to have lived on our planet, and as being unique to the degree that no one can be compared to Him.
I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.”
The Good News about Jesus is called the Gospel. That is the Good News of what Jesus has done for us. It is an accomplished event through His life, death and resurrection. There is nothing we can add or subtract from what He did for us. That is the Good News.
Our modern civilisation is organised around the fact of Jesus’ life. Whatever your religion, whether it is an army commander in North Korea or a jihadi terrorist in Pakistan everyone acknowledges Jesus every time they use the international dating system. Time itself is structured around the event of Jesus’ birth. Some of the noblest quests- of history was motivated by a love for Jesus. The life of Jesus changed human history.
If I am happy with my spiritual life, why do I need Jesus? He was an inspiring moral role model, who like many other historical teachers offered us a path to truth and enlightenment. God is in everything beautiful and pure, surely many paths lead to God? Why do I need to limit myself to one teacher, one guru, one master, one swami, one prophet or one Christ? Why do I need to limit my spiritual experiences to Jesus? Why do I need Jesus?
I hear people talk about receiving Jesus, I am not sure what this means. I do believe that Jesus existed. I believe that it is a historical fact that He lived, I even believe that He rose from the dead. I love going to church. I do have times that I pray and I have favourite Bible verses which I always read. I am just not sure what it means to receive or accept Jesus into my life.
